Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior has said that the proposals by governors for the third tier government is not only misguided but also misplaced. Speaking during an interview on NTV on Tuesday, Kilonzo said that the Kenyan government cannot afford to sponsor such a system of governance because it is costly to the taxpayers. He asked the county bosses, who are finishing their second term in power, to reconsider the idea.
"Can we afford this sort of things? As far is am concerned that proposal is misplaced," he argued.
The lawmaker also said that he is not certain whether the proposal by the county bosses aims at creating jobs for them upon their retirement from their current positions in government.
"I am not sure whether the idea of mirroring the devolution structure to the national government is an attempt by the governors to seek a job," he said.
On his part, Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria said that there is the need to differentiate between the two levels of government before the final decision can be made on the same. He argued that the fact that we have already another structure leaves us in a dilemma of what is the next viable option to pursue.
"We need to differentiate between the third tier and regional government. The third tier is where we keep the national government, county government and regional government in between. The regional government is where we amalgamate the counties," Kuria said.
