A section of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region has called for the formation of a new political party.
Speaking during a funeral in Laikipia County on Saturday, the leaders claimed that they can no longer rely on the Jubilee Party alone in te 2022 Presidential election.
The leaders who were pushing for a new regional political outfit argued that uniting as a region would increase their command in the next general election.
Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega claimed that they should use the remaining period to the election to establish their stand.
"We have 947 days to the next general election. Obviously we cannot be politicking from Monday to another Monday," he stated.
The leaders added that they should allow other politicians to plan for them, but instead, they should rise up and approach election independently as a region.
"We cannot all fit in one place and when the time comes and Uhuru is not there we are sorted. If we are going to anyone's place we have to go with our own house, our own political party.
A number of leaders from the region, however, opposed the move and claimed that they should remain with the ruling Jubilee party under the administration of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
