Benga musician John Mwangi Ng’ang’a popularly known as John DeMathew who died in a tragic road accident on Sunday night near Blue Post Hotel along the Thika-Kenol Road was once linked to having a love affair with Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Wa Chege.
The rumours which surfaced after DeMathew released a video of his song 'Njata Yakwa' which featured Chege who was then a radio presenter had nothing close to a relationship between the two as claimed.
According to DeMathew who later refuted the claims, the Woman Rep was only helping him to achieve something big in the music industry.
"I have two wives, Caroline Waithira and Sarafina Mwangi. Ms Chege was not my wife but I owe her lots of gratitude for helping me make a name and attain class in the music industry. She showed me how to use video illustrations in my songs like the Njata Yakwa hit song in which she featured,” the artist said in 2017 during an interview with Kameme TV as quoted by Daily Nation.
Several leaders including ODM leader Raila Odinga have joined in mourning the sudden death of musician who has been praised for his wonderful lyrics which were educative.
"John Ng'ang'a Mwangi a.k.a John De Mathew did a great job as an artist. He enlightened young people against illicit brews while also educating his community on culture and current affairs. I wish his family and fans comfort during this trying time. May his soul rest in peace," Raila said in a tweet on Monday.
Until his demise, DeMathew served as the chairman of the recently launched Talents, Musicians and Composers Sacco comprising all musicians from Mt Kenya region.
