North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) chairman Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago now says that efforts to promote peace in West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet and Samburu have borne fruits.
He says economic growth and food production has already been realized in those regions that had suffered economic lag following decades of insecurity and cattle rustling.
“We have realized tremendous improvement of peace and economic growth in parts of the North Rift region since we started focusing on peacebuilding under the North Rift Economic Bloc,” said Uasin Gishu governor.
Mandago said that grounds that were battlegrounds for cattle rustling have been turned into the food production line. Mandago who spoke during Noreb consultative meeting in Eldoret on Wednesday said peacebuilding along the volatile borders of the Rift had to be attended to as a matter of urgency.
“The people who used to undertake cattle rustling are now doing other economic activities like farming, this has helped maintain peace in the volatile area,” added Mandago.
Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok who also graced the occasion said they are working to ensure there is peace in the Suguta and Baringo Valleys.
He called on the communities living in the areas to maintain peace and live as brothers and sisters and should refrain from being used by politicians to cause chaos.
