130 pupils from Uasin Gishu County have benefited from the Elimu Scholarship.
The scholarship is sponsored by the world bank, Ministry of Education and Equity Bank.
According to Uasin Gishu County Community Scholarship Advisory committee chairman Hassan Bule, they received over 350 applicants.
He says, pupils with 280 marks and came from very poor backgrounds qualified for the scholarship.
"We received over 350 applicants from needy and bright pupils where only 130 pupils qualified from having come from severe poverty background," said Bule.
Bule who spoke to the press after flagging off the 130 Elimu Scholarship beneficiaries on Sunday at Hill School in Eldoret town said the scholarship will cater for school fees, transport, shopping, education kit and uniforms.
"The committee did interviews with the parents and pupils thereafter visited their homestead to ascertain whether the information that was given was true or false," added Bule.
He further said that the beneficiaries were certainly from informal settlements such as Kamukunji, Huruma, Langas, Munyaka, Kambi Teso, Hill School, Kipkaren, Shauri Yako, Kambi Turkana, Mwitiriria, Sukunanga, Bondeni, Maili Nne, Kapsaos among others.
Uasin Gishu County Director of Education Gitonga Mbaka called on the beneficiaries to work hard and concentrate on their education as a sign of appreciation to their sponsors.
He also called on other organizations and institutions to come out and assist other bright and needy pupils.
