Two police officers have been confirmed dead following an Improved Explosive Device (IED) attack in Wajir East Sub-County.
The incident, which occurred at 4 pm on Friday left scores of police officers with injuries. The police officers were on their regular patrol before the incident took place.
“Today at around 1600hrs special forces officers attached to Kotulo Patrol base while on their way from Khorof-Arar to Kotulo onboard their camp Landcruiser was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED),” read a police report.
The officers met their death while on their way to Kotulo from Khorof-Arar. The four of the officers escaped death with head injuries after the attack while three others sustained injuries on their chests and backs.
The Toyota Landcruiser which they had boarded was badly damaged following the attack.
It remains unclear whether the Al Shabaab terror militia is behind the attack. The incident comes barely two weeks after the Chief of the Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe toured Somalia. During the tour, he hailed the KDF officers for their good work.
“I have come here today to bring Christmas and New Year greetings, first from our Commander-In-Chief, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and also from KDF fraternity at home. They are proud of you and of the successes you have achieved during your tour of duty,” he said.
