A 43-year-old man has drowned in Yatta, Machakos County.

Festus Muia drowned while crossing River Kinyongo on Wednesday night.

The incident was confirmed by the Yatta Police boss Edward Changach.

Changach said the deceased was in company of a friend during the incident.

He said the duo were headed home from Ngangani village before the man drowned while crossing the bridge that had been toppled with water after the river broke its banks due to ongoing heavy rains.

"At around 9.00pm on Wednesday, one Festus muia who was in company of his friend is reported to have drowned in River Kinyongo. A seasonal one which was flooded due to heavy rains," Changach said.

Changach said police officers had retrieved the body.

He said the deceased's friend managed to escape death after he swam to safety.

The body was moved to Matuu Mediance Hospital mortuary.

Changach told residents to exercise caution when crossing rivers and streams this rainy season to avert tragedies.
