Political analyst Prof Herman Manyora has said the rising fears about constitutional amendments in the Mt Kenya region have everything to do with power.

About 40 politicians from the region on Thursday vowed to oppose the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report should it propose picking of the president, or prime minister from Parliament.

Speaking to the Star, Manyora argued that though the Mt Kenya region is heavily populated, it has fewer voting zones, which would make it hard for the region to make any impact in parliament election.

“They have a sense of entitlement. They think they deserve to be the rulers of this country. That is why they want the power of this country not to be dissolved. Under normal circumstance, every election cycle, they must get someone in power,“ he told the Star on Thursday.

On his part, nominated Amani National Congress (ANC) lawmaker Godfrey Osotsi bashed the group for working against the change being pursued in Kenya.

He claimed the group is working against the unity push headed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, both of whom have promised to back the BBI report.

"These are people who are acting at the behest of the deputy president. The DP is using all the loopholes to derail the reform agenda. These are people who do not want change in this country. They want raw power,” he said.

The BBI taskforce is expected to hand over the report to President Kenyatta in the next few days.
