Makutano Member of County Assembly (MCA) Brian Kisila has asked the County Government of Machakos to ensure the asbestos roof at Mwala Level Four Hospital is removed and disposed of.
Speaking in Makutano on Sunday, Kisila said that the roofs could be hazardous more so if water harvested from them is consumed.
He said that the roofing material is well known to cause cancer, adding that there is a need for the roof to be replaced immediately.
"The hospital is being given a makeover and I would like to urge Governor Mutua to consider replacing the harmful asbestos roofing in the hospital, just like other government building," said Kisila.
He also urged the county government to set up a mortuary at Mwala Level Four Hospital.
The MCA observed that residents from the sub-county have been depending on Machakos Level Five, Thika Level Five and Kangundo Level Four hospital mortuaries. He noted that the situation causes residents to incur higher costs as they are forced to travel longer distances.
"Mwala people need a mortuary and I'm not wrong. This is not in bad faith but death is inevitable," he said.
