Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has given his proposal on how to deal with the issue of electoral malpractice in the country.
Speaking on Saturday during the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) meeting in Kitui, Governor Wangamati called for IEBC to be devolved.
He argued that if IEBC is devolved, results do not have to be sent to Nairobi for verification and announcement, adding that everything will be done at the county level.
"To deal with election malpractice hapa Kenya, sisi tumepeana proposal kama Western province (we have given a proposal as Western province), we must devolve the IEBC," Wangamati said.
IEBC has been a subject of discussion during the BBI meetings, with a section of the political class calling for the current commissioners to be sent home.
The tenure of the current IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati ends after the 2022 general election.
Following the 2017 disputed elections, the body has been at the centre of controversy, with some of its commissioners accused of engaging in cheating.
During the 2017 campaigns, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) held protests against the electoral body, calling for the removal of some members
The then IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, found himself in the spotlight having been accused by the opposition of plotting to rig the elections for the government.
