A trader and his wife on Tuesday appeared before Gichugu law court in Kirinyaga County for alleged possession of counterfeit flour.
The duo was arrested on Saturday in Kianjokoma market, Embu County in possession of the product.
John Muriithi and his wife could not plead against the charges, owing to the incomplete investigations.
Appearing before magistrate Ken Odhiambo, the prosecution team under Nancy Sang noted that investigators required more time to complete investigations.
Ms Sang asked that the suspects be detained for five more days to allow winding up of the investigations.
"Samples of the confiscated flour has been taken to Government Chemist in Nairobi for analysis but the results are not yet out," stated Ms Nancy Sang, as quoted by Standard.
She also expressed fears that the suspects may miss court appearance if released on bond.
The suspects' lawyer Lugard Mugushu downplayed Sang's request, adding that the prosecution team lacked a concrete reason as to why the two should not be freed.
"No criminal charge has been preferred against my clients, and I don't see any reason why they should be kept in a police cell for five days," said Mugushu when he asked the court to free the suspects.
Sources from the prosecution side indicated that the suspects had been found with 256 maize flour packets purportedly Raha Premium.
They both secured their release on Sh20,000, and the case set for mention on February 3.
