A group of elderly and vulnerable women from Kiambu County on Monday received food donations from a well-wisher.
The group which claim to have not received food for days were given food by former Thika town MP Alice Ng’ang’a.
Among the items that the women from the shanties of Thika’s Majengo estate received included beans, wheat and maize flour, soaps, sugar among other items.
The women, more than 100 who thanked the former MP said they mostly rely on donations from well-wishers to survive.
Lucia Mumbi, the former MP’s representative said most of the elderly women suffer and need regular support and checkup.
Mumbi said the elderly women who risk being sexually assaulted cannot depend on their children who most are drunkards and lack jobs.
She said the women have not been enrolled in the government’s cash transfer program and also the free NHIF cover which will help them receive the necessary health care services when they get sick.
“County governments should conduct a door to door survey to have a list of all the suffering elderly women then come up with a programme to provide healthcare services and food donations,” said Mumbi.
Lydia Wanjiru, the representative of the elderly women said the women need assistance from the county government adding that they depend on donations.
“Urban life is difficult for the aged. We have to forfeit meals despite suffering from health complications. Most of the times we rely on donations from well-wishers,” said Wanjiru.
