This is the statement we usually make on Fridays.

Most employees can’t hold their joy, imagining that the weekend is here again. One day of leaving the office early, and two days of resting from the daily office work, as well as children resting from the school routine. It’s awesome. Isn’t it?

But where did the weekend come from? This is a question many of us haven’t yet got the answer. Who invented weekends? And again, when did the weekends begin?

Well, historically, the thing of taking a day of rest was birthed by religion. For instance, Muslims take their weekly rests on Fridays, the Jews do it on Saturdays and Christians on Sundays.

The issue of taking two days of rest in a week started taking shape during the industrial revolution, way back in the 1800s

It’s during this time when the factories that produced consumer goods began to transform the traditional farming economy into the industrial one.

So the workers in these factories disliked working in certain hours. They also didn't like working seven days a week. This gave birth into labour strikes in the US, workers sending a message to their employers that they need some time with their families.

With time, these employers realized that it was good to give their workers two days of rest in a week, that is, Saturday and Sunday, and that how weekends were born.

As many people may think, weekends were not brought about by religion. It should be credited to the labour movement as well as labour unions.

Enjoy your weekend! Won’t you?
