Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has said that President Uhuru Kenyatta has the mandate to extend his term in office.
In a tweet on Thursday, Kipkorir said that the head of state can push for the removal of the Presidential term limit from the constitution to give him room to remain in leadership longer than expected.
He cited the case of Russia and China where the President rooted for the removal of their terms in office and remained the rulers.
"Our Constitution has Articles to amend it including on the Presidential term. China President, Xi Jinping removed term limit in China Constitution ... Russia President, Vladimir Putin has initiated moves to do it in Russia ... President Uhuru Kenyatta has a right to do same," he tweeted.
He added: "Why are people getting emotional on a Constitution we passed? All the Articles of the Constitution are binding on each Kenyan including Article 255 that allows for Presidential term limit to be changed. Getting emotional & throwing tantrums doesn’t void Article 255!"
His remarks come after Deputy President William Ruto said that Uhuru has no plans to stay in office longer than 2022. Ruto hinted that Uhuru will retire in a peaceful manner and leave him to assume the top leadership of the nation when that time comes.
“For clarity, the party has no scheme or plan to change the constitution with the intent to take Kenya back to the dark days to have leadership concentrated in one corner of this country," he said.
