Interior and Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has assured Kiambu residents affected by the construction of the Karimenu Dam that they will be compensated.
Hailing the progress made in the construction of the dam on Thursday, the CS said that funds had been set aside by the national government for compensation.
"I want to assure the residents of Gatundu North that we have money set aside in the budget of this year. We will continue seamlessly to ensure that we have finished the compensation. (Nataka kuwahakikishia wananchi wa Gatundu North kwamba Phase 2 na compensation ile ya kumaliza mradi, tuko na pesa kwa budget mwaka huu. Tutaendelea seamlesslessly ili tumalize hio compensation)," Matiang'i said in a YouTube video posted on Friday.
He also assured that jobs that will be created from the dam construction will be given to the local residents.
The Karimenu Dam construction had been rocked by tremendous controversy as those affected by the project held protests demanding compensation from the government.
CS Matiang'i's announcement will come as great relief to those whose land was taken for the multi-billion shilling dam project.
The dam project was conceived with the express aim of boosting the country's water supply and reducing the pressure on other dams providing water supply.
