Trump was impeached on Wednesday by the House of Representatives for two articles; obstruction of Congress and abuse of office.

Shortly after the vote, Trump insisted that the allegations had nothing to do with him, adding that Democrats were targeting American voters.

"In reality, they are not after me, they are after you. I am just in the way," said Trump, whose fate now lies with the Senate.

He becomes the third President to be impeached after Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998).

Like the two, Trump is likely to survive at the Senate due to super majority of the Republican party, which could not save him in Congress due to little numbers.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of witch-hunt and said he will address the nation on Thursday.

"At 9:30am tomorrow morning, on the Senate floor, I will speak about House Democrats’ precedent-breaking impeachment of the President of the United States," he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who engineered the impeachment said: "No one is above the law, Mr. President. #DefendOurDemocracy."

IIhan Omar, the Minnesota 5th District Representative, hailed the impeachment terming it as a dawn for democracy.

"With this impeachment vote, the world is also able to see the fruits of our democracy and the glory of the checks and balances preserved in our Constitution. Unlike the dictatorship my family fled, in a democracy, we don’t just vote. We get to impeach a lawless president," she said.
