Controversial billionaire Chamanlal Kamani is dead.
Kamani died on Monday in Nairobi after a long battle with illness.
The tycoon died without sharing his side of the story as far as the masterminds of the Anglo Leasing scandal are concerned.
His name was adversely mentioned in the scandal that saw the government lose billions to unknown individuals both within and outside government. His life was rocked by all sorts of controversies including corruption-related scandals.
He faced a series of criminal cases during his life. The death of the tycoon is with no doubt a big blow to the government in its quest to recover billions.
He is believed to have made billions through illegal payments he received from his companies. The businessman ran the companies with his two sons, Deepak and Rashmi Kamani.
A letter presented to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) indicates that the firms associated with the businessman were paid more than Sh3.83 billion in dirty deals.
“Except for project Flagstaff which is being resolved differently, in the other five contracts, PwC valuation reports suggest that the government paid the suppliers more than the value for works, goods and service. As under each of the contracts,” read part of the letter.
The probe into the matter has ran for years despite public outcry. The suspects still walk around because of the lack of sufficient evidence against them.
