Canadian-based Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna claims that the handshake team is addressing symptoms of evils facing Kenya's leadership but failing to deal with the root cause.
Miguna termed a report produced by the handshake team that sought to rid the country of challenges bedevilling it as a mere public relations stunt.
The former Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful argued that the problems facing Kenya are caused by negative issues including entrenched tribalism, abuse of office and fostered impunity.
"The #HandChieth team lists SYMPTOMS as the main DISEASE facing Kenya but omit to mention ROOT CAUSES like the CULTURE OF IMPUNITY, ABUSE OF POWER and TRIBALISM," read part of the post.
While alluding to the example given by the team of past elections in 1992, 2007 and 2017 which were marred by disputes and chaos, he said that electoral fraud was to blame as opposed to divisive politics as indicated by the handshake team.
He asserted that elections and a referendum have to be divisive because they are characterized by competition.
However, he insisted that fairness, equity and transparency must be guarded to satisfy the losing and the winning sides.
"All COMPETITIVE elections and referenda are INHERENTLY DIVISIVE because voters must make choices between candidates, manifestos and questions. Neither elections nor their competitive nature cause violence. Violence, death and destruction have been caused by ELECTORAL FRAUD," noted Miguna.
According to the Canadian barrister, fair and satisfactory competition should be adopted through strict adherence and observance of the rule of law.
