The Football Federation of Kenya boss Nick Mwendwa has weighed in on the financial impact that the withdrawal of betting firms in the country has had on football.
Speaking to members of the press Saturday, the FKF president revealed that the withdrawal blew a 600 million financial hole in the finances of footbal in the country.
"We have seen betting companies withdraw from football and we have lost 600 million shillings in sponsorship. We as FKF, we have already lostr 200 million shillings. If you look at SportPesa and Betin, we have lost alot of money."
(Tumeona betting companies zikitoka kwa football, tukapoteza 600 million in sponsorship. Sisi kama FKF, tayari financially tumepoteza karibu milioni mia mbili. Ukiangalia Sportpesa, ukiangalia Betin, tumepoteza pesa nyingi), " the FKF president said.
Nick Mwendwa's words come as scores of football clubs in the country struggle financially following the withdrawal of the betting companies.
The dramatic withdrawal came in the wake of a standoff between the firms and the Kenyan government over taxes.
According to the Kenya Revenue Authority, the affected firms owed the government billions in unpaid tax, a contention that officials of the firms have strenuously denied.
Efforts to resolve the impasse did not yield much, forcing the firms to throw in the towel.
