Recently, Deputy President William Ruto gave a clear indication that he may not be in the 2022 general election presidential ballot paper.

According to the DP, who was speaking in his Sugoi home when he hosted a section of Kikuyu leaders, no Kenyan should die because of him come the next poll. He added that he would rather quit the Presidential race and vie for another seat for the sake of the country's unity.

If this statement is to be taken seriously, this could come as a shocker to be many who already view him as the front runner in the race to State House.

Should he make good his "threat" to quit the race to State House, what next for him? Does he have an alternative political plan, just in case? Does he have his preferred choice?

Dr Ruto's statement came almost the same week former Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama claimed that there is a looming political deal between the DP and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

According to Muthama, the duo's alliance will take over the country's leadership come the next general election. However, Kalonzo and his party operatives swiftly dismissed the former Senator saying that the former Vice President is firmly behind President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Was there any coincidence in the timing of those statements from Dr Ruto and Muthama? If not, could there be something boiling? Can Kalonzo be Ruto's surprise choice for President come 2022?

Remember, Kalonzo and Ruto were once close associates before the 2007 polls. As the founding members of ODM, they seem to know each other.

Though they went different routes before that 2007 general election, with Kalonzo going for presidency and Ruto supporting Raila Odinga, the duo can be a good political couple.

A Ruto-Kalonzo deal can be a little unimaginable. But this is politics. The unexpected can happen. For now, we wait and see. Time will tell.
