The Nakuru County government has called for the revival of the Itare Dam project, which has since stalled over possible corruption.
Speaking at a burial event in Ngata, Nakuru, on Saturday, Nakuru Deputy Governor Erick Korir called for a speedy probe into the matter so that the dam construction can continue.
“That project is key to our development agenda. We want to see the project back on track so that we can quench the thirst of residents and plan ahead. We expected that once completed, the project would end the water crisis in the county,” he said.
The dam, which was to serve over one million residents of Molo, Njoro, Rongai, Nakuru and Kuresoi will supply about 100,000 cubic metres of water on a daily basis.
In Kuresoi, residents lamented over the halt of operations. Stephen Kiprotich, a resident, termed it even more painful seeing machines that were meant for the construction rusting at the site.
"Our hopes have faded; the light at the end of the tunnel faded a long time ago when we gave up on the project,” he said.
He proposed punishment for those found to have been involved in the scandal.
