Viewed as strategic ahead of his 2022 supposed presidential ambitions, Mr Odinga has been using handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta to reach out to the region that has traditionally opposed him.

And in his company were close confidants led by Siaya Senator James Orengo, Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina and Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga.

During the event, Mr Odinga revisited running mate debate, this time cracking a joke that Waiguru, who is believed to be a favourite presidential running mate, had found a walking mate.

"Sasa mimi nimefurahia kufika hapa. Niliskia Mumbi (Waiguru) alisema watu fulani wamemwambia akuwe running mate wao. Lakini mimi nimefurahia kwa sababu leo amepata walking mate," he said amid laughter.

(I am happy to be here today. I heard Mumbi saying that some people have approached her to be running mate. I am happy because she has found a walking mate too).

While Ole Kina is an important pillar among Maa community, he partly works in Raila's legal team. Mrs Wanga is currently heading the embrace Kenya team, a key anchor of handshake.

For Orengo, he is one of unifying figure in Parliament for Mr Odinga. However, according to Sunday Nation, he is not included among Raila's inner circle which is preparing for referendum.

“The strategy is simply to help Raila navigate his politics. You can see that he has abandoned confrontational politics and taken the path of consultation,” a source familiar with the team said.

But in recent weeks, Orengo has been traversing the country with Mr Odinga, an indication that he's keen to regain his position in the kitchen cabinet.
