The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has warned the general public against posing for photos and videos with bank notes.
A statement from the top bank in the country indicates that an individual who defies the directive risks being jailed.
Individuals who will be found misusing the currency risk a fine of Sh100, 000 or more.
In the recent past, Kenyans have been sharing photos and videos while posing with the new notes after they were unveiled on Madaraka Day.
CBK took to social media to share the new development as it seeks to curb increased cases of money laundering, and other forms of economic crimes.
“Did you know? If you would like to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose, you MUST apply in writing to the Central Bank of Kenya for approval. CBK will consider your application and either allow it or reject it. There are penalties for contravening this,” reads parts of the warning on CBK’s Twitter account.
“No person shall use cash or images of cash, current or historical, for publication or promotional or any other purposes other than as currency without the prior written approval of the bank,” the notice states further.
The bank has now reminded individual who want to pose with the notes in their videos or photos to apply for the same failure to which they face tough penalties.
