Alun Cairns quit as Welsh secretary after it emerged that he had lied about his aide Ross England, who is alleged to have sabotaged a rape trial.

The development is the latest in a series of problems that the Boris Johnson campaign is grappling with.

Cairns had long claimed that he was not aware of the evidence that had been given by the aide.

This was not true as it has emerged that the minister had been informed about the rape trial debacle.

"This is a very sensitive matter, and in light of continued speculation, I will tender my resignation as secretary of state for Wales, " Cairns' resignation letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson partly read.

The opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has urged Johnson not to field Allan Cairns as a candidate for Member of Parliament.

"Secondly, if he’s resigning because of his behaviour and involvement in this as the secretary of state then shouldn’t he also be resigning as a Conservative party candidate in the election?'' Corbyn posed.

“Obviously, legally he can stand as a candidate, but does he have a moral right to stand as a candidate? If he’s stepping down as a minister because of his involvement then I would have thought the very least the Conservative party can do is not put him up as a candidate in the next election, " he added.
