Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has defended opposition's calls for a referendum under the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), terming it the most effective solution to Kenya's problems.
Led by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) boss Raila Odinga, the team has been pushing for constitutional amendments to among others, expand the executive arm of the government.
Speaking on Sunday, Wanga insisted that it's only through a larger executive that each Kenyan will feel represented in government, eradicating the current feeling of exclusion.
"An expanded Executive creates cohesion and Kenyans can go about knowing that they are included in leadership," she said on K24's Punchline show on Sunday night.
However, her remarks were faulted by her Uasin Gishu counterpart Gladys Shollei, who is among the forces that have been fighting the attempts to realize the proposed changes.
Shollei said that the solution does not lie in a bigger government, calling for the strengthening of the opposition and allowing the second person in presidential polls into the government instead.
"There have been other suggestions to ensure that the person who garners 40 per cent of the votes also gets in govt, we can strengthen the opposition," said the Woman Rep.
Wanga said that their referendum bid also seeks to create position for the first runners up in the polls in the government.
"In fact, what we have proposed is that the person who garners the second highest votes goes to the Senate," she noted.
