African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Raila Odinga has announced the deployment of Kenya Marine police to Lake Victoria in a bid to curb increasing cases of insecurity.
The move comes after a series of incidents in which Kenyan fishermen have been arrested by police from Uganda and pirates.
Recently, six fishermen from Bondo were arrested and taken to Uganda over trespassing allegations.
Raila made the revelation during the burial of a former teacher, Festus Miyayi in Nyanyonga village in West Yimbo ward.
Chairman of Kuoyo Beach Management Unit (BMU) Willis Opiyo had raised concerns over the rampant incidents of attacks on the fishermen amid government assurance of security.
Opiyo said that the incessant attacks have made life unbearable for the residents.
The fishermen were arrested alongside two boat engines valued at Sh460, 000.
“Insecurity has been on the rise in the lake but no action has been taken despite our persistent plea to the government,” he lamented, as quoted by Standard.
Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda lauded the government for the establishment of police units patrolling the lake.
Leaders have been lamenting of the issues of security in the lake.
