Egerton University main campus in Njoro has suspended seven student leaders following students protest at the campus on December 4, this year.
The seven students leaders received their suspension letters which were signed by the acting Registrar Academic Affairs, Prof Mwanarusi Saidi.
The suspended Egerton University Students Association (EUSA) officials are the association’s chairperson, the vice-chairperson, the secretary-general, director for gender and entertainment, treasurer and the director for students’ welfare.
Saidi in the letter accused the leaders of inciting the students to strike early December which led to the institution being closed indefinitely.
Saidi warned that during the suspension period, any student official who will be found in the university compound risk legal action being taken against them.
“Following the strike which led to the university being closed on December 4, 2019, the Senate resolved that members of EUSA Student Governing Council who called for the assembly, demonstration and picketing of the students, be suspended from the university till further notice.”
“Note further that beyond these penalties, the university is not restrained from handing over your cases to the State law enforcement authority for legal action,” the letters read.
During the December 4 incident, students held demonstrations to protest the institution’s decision to bar students with fee arrears from sitting exams and also the university’s threat to defer students for one year, who have not cleared their fee balances.
Last week, the university ordered the students to pay Sh16,862 each as damage fee following the strike.
