Speaking during a church service, the legislator hit out at Sonko for declaring on live television the support for legalization of bhang.

"You know some of these people, and Bishops you need to pray and pray very hard for that Sonko fellow. How can he stand on national television to say that marijuana and bangi should be legalized? Know a person and he is a leader. (Sasa mtu na ni kiongozi, aki tunashindwa). On national television saying that we should legalize the sale and consumption of bang in this country. I think we need to pray very hard for some of these people,” Gachagua said.

During the burial ceremony of the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth early this month, Sonko had asked the government to legalize the drug.

The city boss also argued other leaders to continue with the late Ken Okoth's push to legalize bhang in his honour.

“Our brother who has fallen had a very important proposition, people are afraid to say controversial things but I will say it, our brother wanted marijuana/bhang to be legalized. And because we hear that bhang is medicinal and can cure cancer, youthful legislators present here like Babu Owino, KJ and Jaguar, do not let that good work started by Ken Okoth to end with his death. Push through with that Bill and see to it that bhang is legalized,” Sonko said as quoted by Citizen Digital.

“And you also know that the president is going to Jamaica. If the Bill goes through, we will ensure that we import clean bhang from Jamaica to help cure cancer," he added.
