In a tweet on Sunday, Obiri noted that; ''World 5000m Champion for the second time! It has been a long season since I won the World Cross Country Championships in March, but I finally got what I wanted."

On Saturday, Obiri won the 5000m Women race setting the new championship record time 14:26.72, at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships that are underway in Doha, Qatar.

Her compatriot Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi came in second in a time of 14:27.4.

This was the second time she has bagged the gold in the race to become the second athlete from Kenya to win the race in two consecutive World Championships.

Vivian Cheruiyot who is now a marathoner was the first Kenyan to have won the race back-to-back world titles in the race.

Cheruiyot won the gold in 2009 and retained the title in 2011.

In March this year, Obiri won medals at outdoors, indoors and cross country world individual titles at the senior level.

Her record made her the first woman to win at the three competitions.

This record was once set by Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele.

Last month, Obiri finished fourth at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League final in Brussels.
