The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has appointed former Mathare United coach Francis Kimanzi as the head coach of Harambee Stars.
Kimanzi replaces Frenchman Sebastien Migne who exited the national team technical bench on Monday.
His appointment is good news to Kenyan football since it is promoting local products rather than importing coaches from Europe.
With the 2019 African Cup of Nation which was held in Egypt, it was evident that African coaches can do better when given opportunities.
The two teams that faced each other in the Afcon 2019 final are both managed by local coaches with Senegal being managed by Aliou Cisse and Algeria managed by Djamel Belmadi.
These two local coaches had both represented their respective countries during their playing days and currently doing a good job as head coaches with Senegal outperforming other African teams during the 2018 World Cup.
It is time African countries promote their local brands rather than relying on expensive foreign coaches who end up not taking the national team far.
With the appointment of Francis Kimanzi, I believe Kenyan football will go far and other local coaches will be motivated to work hard to earn that post one day.
I hope Kimanzi does well just like former Harambee Stars head coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee who led Kenya to the 2004 African Cup of Nations.
