Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has slammed President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga over their push for constitutional reforms ahead of the 2022 polls.
The vocal politician accused the president and the former prime minister alongside other political bigwigs of hatching a plan to cling to power by pushing for constitutional amendments through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Reacting to a story published by Daily Nation indicating that the duo has started working on a rare unity pact with Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetang'ula (Ford-Kenya), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and KANU's Gideon Moi, Khalwale claimed the 'dynasties' were planning to retain power after 2022 through the referendum.
"They have controlled the political power and commonwealth of our mamaland since 1963. Now the dynasties want to perpetuate themselves beyond 2022 by forcing the so-called BBI generated Referendum on the Hustlers of Kenya," he tweeted on Monday.
According to the Nation, the coming together of the six politicians to support the BBI and call for expansion of the Executive arm of government, to accommodate prime minister and two deputies, could be a political strategy for the next election.
"A united front bringing together these key political parties could start a wave that eventually installs a leader at State House in 2022," the daily reported.
Deputy President William Ruto has shown lukewarm support for the BBI. However, his close allies over the weekend rubbished it, an indication they could lead an uprising against it.
