Drinking water at night is good and in fact, keeps the body hydrated for the first few hours of sleep. However, experts have warned against drinking water a few minutes to bed time.
Here are 3 reasons why you should avoid this habit;
1. You could get bladder infections
If you don't wake up in the middle of the night to go and empty your bladder, chances are that you will wake up in the morning so pressed by urine. This is not the point. The point is that keeping your bladder full of urine for too long could pose it to infections. You could also attract other urinary tract infections.
2. You could experience nocturia
What is nocturia? This is the increased need to urinate at night. While we sleep, our body has a series of hormones that slow down kidney function and decrease urine production.
Waking up several times in the night to empty your bladder affects your sleeping patterns and reduces your sleep period. Repeatedly getting up reduces both the duration and quality of sleep.
3. Effects from interrupted sleep
Frequently getting up to urinate causes sleep deprivation. This can have adverse effects on heart health.
According to Healthline.com, lack of quality sleep can influence one's potential for developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and weight gain.
