Political analyst Prof Herman Manyora now says Chief Justice David Maraga remains the only hope for Kenyans for a better country.
Manyora said the economy has been limping and pointed an accusing finger at excessive borrowing and embezzlement of taxpayers money, as the main reasons why Kenyans are suffering.
In a tweet on Monday, the lecturer of linguistics and communications at the University of Nairobi (UoN), said unless Maraga, who is the head of Judiciary and the president of the Supreme Court, ensures all those who have stolen public funds are imprisoned, the economy will collapse.
"The Kenyan economy is hurting. We have over borrowed and over stolen. And now the judiciary is on trial. Maraga is our only hope. Only him can help our economy breath by sending these thieves to jail," he posted.
Speaking to Sunday Nation, Manyora predicted if the economy won't be restored in 2020, Kenya will be in deep crisis where even the leaders will also suffer.
“The sorry state of our economy will render everything else, including politics and politicians, irrelevant if it is not addressed as a matter of national urgency,” the university don said.
Economist Kwame Owino expressed similar sentiments and called on the government to reveal the country’s true debt level for appropriate measures to be taken.
“Let’s hope that Treasury as well as Parliament will get to the bottom of this," said Owino, who is the chief executive officer of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya).
