Responding to the remarks, Kihika, who is a close ally of the DP, said Raila was making such pronouncements since he was desperate, after realising he can't defeat Ruto in the presidential race.

The vocal Senator further accused the ODM boss of a plot to ensure the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which was formed following his handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta, was implemented through dubious means.

"Grasping at straws! Folks this is what desperation looks like! He knows he has no path to victory against Ruto, therefore the pedestrian, populist pronouncements. Enter BBI. Wants to be sneaked in through the back door!" Kihika tweeted on Sunday.

In an exclusive interview on Citizen TV which was aired on Friday, Raila said Ruto should be probed so the source of his wealth can be determined.

He said the probe should be done when the DP is not in his current position, so that he does not interfere with the investigations.

“Which individual can have such money? You are bringing crowds and crowds of people each and every day, slaughtering chicken and paying for their transport and giving them petty cash, what is the source of such cash?” Raila posed.

The sentiments appears to have angered Ruto's allies, who've taken to social media to strongly criticise Odinga.
