History was rewritten on Wednesday after Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki became the first leader of the Horn of Africa nation to visit neighbouring Ethiopia.
The two nations have been in conflict since 1998, which was brought about by the land differences claimed by both.
Eritrea had seceded from Ethiopia in 1993 after decades of civil war. It was initially a province of Ethiopia, found on the far North.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed could not hide his joy, terming President Afeworki 'comrade-in-peace".
"I am happy to welcome again to his second home my comrade-in-peace, President Isaias Afeworki and his delegation," he tweeted.
The trip comes barely a fortnight after Abiy received Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo which he ostensibly honoured with for reconciling with Eritrea.
Last year, Ethiopia appointed the first ambassador to Eritrea but it took him a whole year to settle in Asmara.
"Redwan Hussein has been appointed as Ethiopia's ambassador to Eritrea -- the first for 20 years, the foreign ministry said," according to Ethiopia's state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate.
Abiy Ahmed has been portrayed as an ambassador of peace given his efforts to restore peace in the Horn of Africa.
Wednesday's meeting in Addis Ababa is yet another milestone for his peace keeping efforts in the region that has witnessed skirmishes for decades.
