Matiang'i urged those living outside their jurisdictions to return to those areas or be sacked.

The order was made public by the Ministry's spokeswoman Wangui Muchiri on Friday in a post on Twitter.

According to the tweet, the order was aimed at ensuring that the chiefs are in a better position to understand and respond to the issues of the people living in their administrative units.

"Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs residing outside their areas of jurisdiction have been put on notice to immediately relocate their bases or face the sack. CS @FredMatiangi says they must live within their administrative units to understand & respond to issues affecting their people," the Interior Ministry spokeswoman wrote in her tweet.

Chiefs act as the eyes of the national government at the grass-root level.

They help the government of the day to gain an understanding of what is happening at the grass roots in terms of security, and development projects among other things.

Chiefs in Kenya are on the payroll of the government and are seen as public servants.
