Former basketball ace Kobe Bryant died with other passengers in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California on Sunday, according to the New York Times.

It is reported that the retired LA Lakers and the NBA legend Kobe Bryant died with his 13-year-old daughter and 7 other passengers including the pilot when the private helicopter carrying them crashed into the hills in Calabasas, Los Angeles in foggy conditions on Sunday according to the LA Times.

It is believed that Kobe and his daughter, Gianna were going to attend a basketball game when the helicopter crashed and burned into flames and there were no survivors, even as investigation is underway to establish the cause of the accident.

"Our team will be looking at the history of the pilot and whatever crew was on board,” a member of the investigative board, Jennifer Homendy said, as quoted by LA Times.

Bryant retired in 2016 as the NBA third-highest all-time scorer; having dedicated 20 years of his life playing NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers and is rated as one of the best NBA players of all times, having won five NBA Championship and two Olympic gold medals.

He had a dark side to overcome as he nicknamed himself, Black Mamba to forget his past after he was charged with sexual assault, the case was later solved outside the court

"Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, as reported by the Washington Post. 

The 41-year-old leaves behind four children and a wife, Vanessa.
