Uasin Gishu County Executive in charge of the Finance department Julius Ruto has revealed that 45 county officials have been suspended for allegedly pocketing counties taxes.
Addressing press in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Ruto who was accompanied by Trade, ICT, and Industrialization counterpart Emily Kogos said they had to dismiss the county officials for the mistrust of pilfering the county taxes.
“We gave them dismissal letters and are no longer working with us,” noted Ruto.
“We decided to embrace the collection of taxes using the cashless services by Safaricom to curb corruption in the county," he added.
The County Executive said that embracing the technology has seen an increase in the revenue from Sh3 million to Sh4 million this financial year.
“We can now account for the money collected by printing the Mpesa statement,“ he added.
Simila sentiments were shared by the Trade County executive who reiterated that the county was in a position to verify and account for all county's revenue collected.
“With embracing technology, the parking fee can be paid using Safaricom pay bill number 646464 which reflects on our systems when a client pays," said Kogos.
“I am delighted that the technology is three times effective than how we used to do our operations," she added.
