The car rationing system will see cars with odd and even number plates allowed on the roads on alternate days from date 4-15.

Environmental scientists have said that levels of toxic particles called PM2.5 in the city's air are way higher than the recommended levels.

Millions of New Delhi residents are now at risk of contracting respiratory illnesses due to the severe air pollution.

According to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the rationing plan will see hundreds of thousands of cars out of the road.

Those who contravene the rationing order stand the risk of being fined 4,000 rupees.

There are fears that the measure will not go along in easing the smog as it has been tried before by the city.

The government of India has said in a statement that it has deployed about 300 officers to enforce the rationing system plan.

New Delhi has had for a long time the dubious distinction of being one of the world's most polluted cities, a label that is a source of frustration for the local officials.
