Mutua has claimed that the threats were issued by Deputy President William Ruto and National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Kipchumba Murkomen (Senate) last month.

Onkware says that the allegations could be timed to cripple a possible alliance between Kalonzo and Ruto, by portraying Ruto in bad light in advance, in the Ukambani region.

The philosophy lecturer at the Masinde Muliro University opines that while there is a need to give attention to the claims, chances are very high that they have a political dimension as well.

"It is a serious and security matter he raised, but one would be naïve to rule out the obvious supremacy battle between Mutua and Kalonzo. By making those allegations, Mutua could be timed to paint a possible Kalonzo-Ruto alliance in bad light in Ukambani,” he said on Friday.

On the other hand, he observed that if the threats are real, then the Governor could be in the process of being forced to drop his opposition to Kalonzo.

According to him, a continued tussle between the two might hand Mutua a lot of influence in Ukambani region, elevating him a kingpin position, similar to that of Kalonzo.

“If the threats are credible, then Mutua is being beaten into submission. He is being forced to remain on Kalonzo’s side because if they continue differing, he will be a sort of kingpin playing in the same league with Kalonzo," he added.

The commentator stated that Kalonzo might finally end up working with Ruto to save his political career, now that he seems to be under attack from a section of Ukambani politicians.

He was referring to Mutua and Kitui and Makueni and Kitui governors Kivutha Kibwana and Charity Ngilu, who have been appearing united against him lately.
