The government has finally spoken about plans to import maize.
Speaking in Marigat, Baringo County on Thursday when farmers in the North Rift met with Strategic Food Reserve (SFR) board in Eldoret, Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna said that the government has no intentions of importing maize any soon.
He noted that President Uhuru Kenyatta led government will not hesitate to share with the public any plans to import maize to counter the alleged shortage.
Oguna said that the Jubilee government has heard the concerns of the maize farmers over the alleged plans.
"Before something is done by the government, we have to engage in a discussion. The decision on whether to import maize or not has not been made and all the discussions going on is healthy. We believe when a decision is made, all will be good," said Oguna.
He also said that the government will take the right action when it comes to addressing the shortage of maize.
He revealed that the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots still have enough maize to meet the needs of the people.
Leaders from maize-growing areas have been urging Agriculture Cabinet Secretary to resign over the alleged scheme.
