Yatta member of Parliament Charles Kilonzo now wants the government of Kenya to revive the popular school feeding program.
Speaking through Facebook on Friday, the legislature said that he will pass a motion in parliament to see if the government can revive the food program due to serious famine challenge facing school going children in Yatta.
"Am aware that we are facing a serious famine challenge which is affecting our school going children," part of his post reads.
According to the legislator, the famine challenge is leading to a negative impact on primary schools curricular programs and can lead to increased school drop out cases in future.
"When we (MPs) resume Parliament sessions next week 23/7/2019 we shall move a motion to see how government can revive the school feeding programs," he said.
Yatta sub-county is one of a few sub-counties in Machakos county which are highly affected by famine due to among other factors low rains and their arid state.
In 2009, Kilonzo advised farmers in the area to concentrate their efforts in planting small parcels of land in order to be able to utilize modern technology and various irrigation methods
He went head to urge them to stop selling all their farm produce but instead store some seeds for next season.
"We have told farmers that it is most crucial that they do not sell the seeds and when they harvest they do not sell the food," Kilonzo said as quoted by capital news.
