Burial of a man turned chaotic on Wednesday after the deceased wife escaped mysteriously while the ceremony was ongoing at Mwamatangi village in Bokiengi, Boochi in Bomachoge, Kisii County.
Aron Mokaya, an elder said mourners had gathered to bury Julius Onyonka when the wife, Zipporah Nyaguku who is 6 months pregnant escaped from the burial ceremony.
"The burial ceremony proceeded well until 2 p.m when family members and few selected villagers were asked to go to the graveyard to bury the deceased. It was shocking that the wife and her 16 months-old-son were missing at the gravesite," said Mokaya as reported by Egesa FM.
The elder accused the wife's parents of advising her not to throw soil to the deceased grave as required by Kisii customs.
"Zipporah was mislead by her father who was among the mourners. We will not allow the pregnant woman to return to the homestead because she abandoned her dead husband," said Mokaya.
Area chief Simon Nyakoyo confirmed the drama saying the family proceeded to bury the deceased without the wife.
"I want to condemn the woman's parents for misleading their daughter to abandon the dead husband at the last minute. I urge the family of the late to sit and decide the way forward," said the chief.
