This is according to Boniface Kyengo, Manager Equity Bank (K) Limited, Machakos Branch.Kyengo spoke to Hivisasa during Equity Bank’s celebration of 35 years existence in the country on Thursday.

“In the business sector within Machakos, out of every three businesses, one is supported by Equity Bank.” He said that several residents in the transport sector, construction sector, land development, local businesses, SMEs, women’s groups, self-help groups, among others have made their businesses grow using loans from Equity Bank.

Kyengo noted that as a Bank, they have also supported several start-up businesses not only in the county but across the region.

“We have supported the economy of not only Machakos but also Makueni and Kitui counties and that is something we are proud of,” he said.

The manager added, “We unveiled our new logo yesterday and today we celebrate 35 years of operations by sharing a cake with our customers.”    

He said customers are advised to visit the bank’s branches in the region for various services.

Kyengo said activations of accounts are free during this celebration season.

He noted that there are several branches in the region namely; Machakos, Matuu, Tala, Gateway Mall in Syokimau, EPZ Athi River, Wote, Mwingi, Kitui, Mutomo and Kibwezi.

“In fact, we are opening a branch in Emali within a month’s time,” Kyengo said.

“Equity Bank has tremendously changed the view many people had of banks. They feared entering a bank since they thought that banks are only meant for the rich. But nowadays, they are aware that we serve all customers high net worth , salaried and wage workers, youth, farmers, SMEs, cooperative societies, youth and women groups, etc."

Kyengo said all these categories of clients access loans to invest in various types of businesses of their choices. He divulged that most of those operating transport businesses in Ukambani region have acquired their vehicles through Equity Bank. Kyengo said the same applies to the locals who are in other businesses adding that, “We have supported more than  50 percent of the businesses with loans.”

He also mentioned the Bank’s Wing to Fly Programme noting that since its launch in 2010, over 16,000 vulnerable scholars have benefited from the four-year scholarship across the country.

The manager added that other thematic areas which the bank supports include agriculture, innovation, and environment.

“Generally, I am proud that products in Equity Bank are tailor-made to meet the needs of the customers. It is the customer who dictates what type of products we come up with. All classes of customers have a product that suits their needs.”
