Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has condemned the inhumane arrest of activist Mildred Atty Owiso on Saturday morning in Buruburu estate, Nairobi.
In a video shared across social media platforms, police officers were seen forcing their way into her residence by jumping over her locked gate, while others were recorded propelling teargas inside her house.
Sifuna condemned the incident and noted this was not the first time the police were harassing the activist who is also a blogger.
He called on Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to order her immediate release and also apologise over the conduct of his officers.
"This is totally unacceptable! What grudge does the National Police Service hold against this lady because this isn't the first time? She must be freed unconditionally and an unreserved apology rendered by IG Mutyambai. The police is supposed to be a service, not a force," Sifuna tweeted.
Mildred was reportedly arrested after she ordered a traffic police officer out of her car on Thursday along Jogoo Road in Nairobi.
Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi also condemned Midred's arrest, saying police were out to intimidate bold citizens who dare to fight corruption.
"The police are doing this to intimidate Atty and everyone else fighting for a better Kenya. Police never use that kind of force when arresting rich crooks. That kind of violence is only used on everyday citizens who are fighting corruption and the culture of impunity," Mwangi said.
