The two leaders have been in opposing camps, both declaring intentions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.

But during the installation of Eldoret Catholic Diocese Bishop Dominic Kimengich on Saturday, both leaders limited their speeches to uniting the country.

"The newly installed Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, his Lordship Kimengich Dominic, is a man of valour; pure of heart, down to earth and a venerated servant of humanity. He has advanced the cause of the Lord on earth, and the people of Baringo County are elated to have him as their son," Moi said.

Dr Ruto, on his part, lauded the church for its contributions towards fostering peace and stability across the world during the installation.

"The Church plays a critical role in inculcating a common sense of shared values; it is the foundation of togetherness and unity in our society. These values help in eradicating divisiveness, ethnicity and hatred. We will continue to work with the church in building bridges of unity and peace, creating a nation that we can all cherish and be proud of," he said.

The two have divided loyalty within Rift Valley region ahead of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rally scheduled this month in Eldoret.
