The 2019/2020 Kenya Premier League (KPL) season is taking shape with up to six teams firmly in the title race.

The six teams are; Gor Mahia, Tusker FC, Western Stima, Kakamega Homeboyz, Ulinzi Stars and KCB.

Kisumu-based Western Stima, stands a strong mathematical chance of winning the KPL title this season, because of the following reasons:

1. Coach

In Salim Babu, Western Stima is being managed by one of the best coaches around. Babu was appointed Stima coach in April this year, taking the reins from Paul ‘Yago’ Ogai.

His mission was to ensure the team retains its KPL status last season, which he accomplished.

In September, the former Sony Sugar player and coach bagged the KPL coach of the month award after leading Stima to a good run.

He was in the team that won the KPL title at Sony Sugar in 2006, and he may as well win the title as Western Stima coach this season.

2. Management

Under chairman Laban Jobita, Stima is one of the best managed teams in the KPL.

Training and match days are organised in a professional manner. As a former footballer, Jobita surely knows how to run a football club.

Like most cooperate clubs, player strikes and go-slows due to non-payment of salaries and allowances are unheard-off at Stima.

With this organisation and management, Western Stima stands a chance of winning the title this season.

3. Squad

This season, Western Stima has a squad with both experienced players and the ‘young turks’ out to leave a mark.

At the back, Stima enjoys the services of 35-year-old veteran goalkeeper Samuel ‘Abawa’ Odhiambo, while the striking department has 18-year-old Kisumu Day secondary school student Benson Omalla.

Omalla has scored 6 goals so far this season, two less than top scorer; Wazito FC’s Elvis Rupia.

This blend of youth and experience can end up handing Stima the title this year.
