The consignment, purportedly containing laptops, computers, projectors and cameras was found to be empty upon arrival at the Parliament buildings in Nairobi on Wednesday.

This was confirmed by National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai, who, however, on Thursday said that the matter has entirely been left in the hands of the Chinese embassy.

Sialai said that it's now up to China to trace the whereabouts of the merchandise after the empty container was delivered by Bolloré Logistics.

“We have left it for the Chinese embassy to use their diplomatic channels to address the matter,” the National Assembly Clerk told the Standard on Thursday.

Similarly, the DCI has said that contrary to its initial announcement, it will keep off the issue, and wants the Chinese authorities in Kenya to take full charge.

The Embassy has since responded positively after visiting the Parliament buildings on Thursday, saying that it will take up the job.

In a statement, the embassy said that it has embarked on a probe and is hopeful that the missing merchandise will be recovered.

"Over the years, the Chinese side has made friendly donations to our Kenyan brothers and sisters, including medical equipment, office equipment and food aid, and they have all been delivered safe and sound," reads the statement quoted by the Standard.

The donation had been sent by the People's Congress of China to the National Assembly.
