After the departure of key players including midfield maestro Francis Kahata, the former captain Haron Shakava and K’Ogalo’s all-time top scorer Jacques Tuyisenge, Gor Mahia's future looks bleak.

All hell broke loose when the shirt sponsor betting firm SportPesa suspended its sponsorship and left the Kenyan market altogether due to a hostile working environment by the government.

This meant that the club did not have the capacity to recruit players of the same calibre as those who left.

In as much as they have kept a hundred per cent record to the start Kenya Premier League (KPL), the team looks blunt at attack and porous at the back.

Nicholas Kipkirui who was expected to fit in the shoes of Tuyisenge has not been at this best due to a persistent knee injury.

The new imports Afriye and Akipye have not yet settled in the team. Last season the team made history by advancing to the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederations Cup, an improvement from the previous season where they were bundled out in the group stage.

Two years ago, they lost 2-1 on aggregate to USM Algier of Algeria in the same competition but they were thrashed 6-1 by the same opponent this year showing the extent at which the club has nose-dived.

The five-year sponsorship by Argo chemicals seems to have come too late since the team has already been eliminated from the CAF Confederations Cup, barely three days after the two parties put pen on paper.

Gor Mahia now shifts focus to the less competitive KPL.

Could this be Gor Mahia's metamorphosis time? only time will tell.
