Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has raised concerns about increasing cases of bullying in schools.
This is after a report by the Ministry of Education showed that Kenya is among the countries with the highest levels of bullying in schools in the entire African continent.
The research, which was conducted by states, schools and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) showed that the cases have become rampant.
“At the national level, bullying in schools in Kenya stands at 57 per cent for students who are bullied on one or more days in a month,” reads parts of the report.
The report also highlights that cases of school unrest have risen leading to the destruction of property as well as the loss of lives at different institutions of learning.
Magoha noted that cases of arson were close to 120 in 2016. The report also showed that children in Kenyan schools have become a major target in terror militia recruitment through radicalisation.
The ministry has now called upon different stakeholders to support the war against the vice to ensure sanity is restored in schools.
The report attributed lack of skills among some teachers, peer pressure and tough work at schools to students dropping out of school to join terror gangs.
